predatorblu‘The ‘Predator’ franchise has spawned off sequels, spin-offs, comic book adaptations, amongst the many avenues that the original film opened up the doors to. ‘Predator’ was originally released in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger being the films main star. ‘Predator’ wasn’t a film with just one main star, all of Arnold’s co-stars were well known and recognized faces that helped add a team full of colorful personalities. It is also about time that this film was released on Blu-ray. Originally ‘Predator’ was supposed to release last year, but FOX for some apparent reason pulled the film at the last second from distribution. Everyone waited and waited which felt like eternity for the reissue on Blu-ray.

‘Predator’ is one of those films that has gained more of a large following with each passing year over the last 2 decades. Schwarzenegger plays the role of the captain for the Marines that have been called to action. Schwarzenegger puts a team together that consists of Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and Sonny Latham to go into the jungle to save their fellow marines that have crashed. As I mentioned earlier, each one of the team members has some kind of personality trait that makes these guys seem like these guys area a rag tag team full of colorful personalities. Schwarzenegger is the leader and brawn, Carl Weathers is the muscle, Jesse Ventura is the loud mouth, and Sonny Latham is the “I won’t take anyone’s shit” attitude/look that he has had for years. It helps having a band of guys that also have personalities that stand out to give ‘Predator’ more than just a group of Marines going in for the save.

Little do the Marines know that once they get to the jungle, they have a nice little surprise waiting for them. The Predator has played a game with the stranded Marines once Arnold and his team have gotten there. They see traces of blood, bodies on their search without knowing what has happened. This turns into a game of Predator and Prey with The Predator hunting down each one of the Marines one by one. The Predators go from planet to planet hunting down their prey for sport. Yes, you read that right; they use humans and other beings as a way to have competitive fun with their family and friends.

The Predator himself is badass and probably one of the best monsters ever created. I originally saw the film when it first released and I was very astonished by the look and overall persona of the Predator. Like the horrified look on Schwarzenegger’s face when he first sees the beast, I was scared a bit myself. The Predator has no remorse for its actions and it thinks its way through a scenario like a laid out plan. The Predator picks off each one of the Marines one by one until the only one that is left is Arnold to fight off the Predator.

Print/Audio Quality

The print is presented in 1080p/MPEG-2 with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio. I have owned several versions of the DVD version of ‘Predator’ and none have been that spectacular looking due to the way the movie was filmed. While the image is not pristine and the print seems to be hit or miss, this is the best that the ‘Predator’ has looked. There is grain throughout the print which some might be turned off by, but one nice thing is that a lot of the speckles or dirt has been cleaned up. I do see a possible double dip coming in the near future on this title.
Video Quality: 3.5/5

The audio is presented in a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 mix, which isn’t that explosive or even have punch to it. The soundfield has its moments in spades, but not as active as I would have expected. Granted this is a film from 22 years ago, the audio mix could have been better. This is more of a front heavy presentation as one would expect. Dialogue is clean and crisp, yet still lacks depth in presentation.
Audio Quality: 3.5/5

Special Features

  • Teaser Trailer for Predator
  • Theatrical Trailers – FOX titles
  • D-Box

This is a shame for not offering the same features as the Collector’s Edition DVD. This is a very bare bones disc for fans that own the Collector’s Edition DVD, making it harder to upgrade.

Final Thoughts

I am a huge fan of the ‘Predator’ films and had to pick this version up on day 1, but I do feel a sense of a double dip coming down the road. The picture and audio quality needs an upgrade and the big issue that many are having is that the extras are slim to none. The Collector’s Edition on DVD was loaded with extras that it received a 2 disc treatment. A huge shame on FOX, for putting fans through this double dip game, that they have been well known for years on DVD. If you can pick this up at a cheaper price like I did when it first released and you are a fan, I would buy it, if not wait for the collector’s edition to eventually release.
