When a man is apparently murdered by his wife Helena (Rosie Fellner) during the night, the rookie criminal psychologist Dr. Kate Fuller (Olga Kurylenko) is assigned to investigate whether she should go to prison or to an institution. She promises to Helena´s little daughter Sophie that her mother would stay with her. But when the woman claims that a demon killed her husband during a sleep paralysis, Dr. Fuller sends her to an institution. However she decides to investigate the case further and discovers a creepy truth about an ancient demon that attacks people with sleep paralysis.
“Mara” is a flawed but creepy horror film, with a demon that attacks during the sleep and slightly recalls Freddy Krueger. The viewer startles many times and the greatest flaw is how easy and quickly Kate discovers the truth about the demon checking the documents Dougie had gathered and studied for a long time. The ambiguous conclusion is also great. My vote is six.
Movie Quality: 8/10
The print is presented in 1080p/MPEG-4 with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Color management is excellent with the style that is being used in the film. Colors are bold, vibrant, and pop off the screen. I couldn’t believe how squeaky clean the image appears throughout. Black levels are rather deep. ‘Hot Pursuit” offers strong color management and deep blacks. There are no blemishes on this print at all, it looks clean with a subtle use of grain throughout the film.
Video Quality: 9/10
The audio is presented in DTS-HD MA lossless 5.1 mix. I couldn’t believe how dynamic the sound effects and the soundtrack were across all surrounds. From fun filled comedy action sequences, you will feel like the action is taking place right in your living room. Bass management is also well done in this film. With the film split between everyone getting chaotic and dialogue, voices come through the center channel rather clean.
