Kit Gordy (AnnaSophia Robb), a difficult young girl, is sent to the mysterious Blackwood Boarding School when her heated temper becomes too much for her mother to handle. Once she arrives at Blackwood, Kit encounters eccentric headmistress Madame Duret (Uma Thurman) and meets the schools’ only other students, four young women also headed down a troubled path. While exploring the labyrinthine corridors of the school, Kit and her classmates discover that Blackwood Manor hides an age-old secret rooted in the paranormal.

I really enjoyed this film. The great cinematography and soundtrack or the brilliant actors (all outstanding), really pull you in. The suspense is well built and there are a few atmospheric scenes and decent scares. Don’t expect something like Twilight at all. This story hides much more for you to explore. The atmosphere, all the different details are there to make you feel uncomfortable to make you wander in an old dark school that could well reflect your inner self. Uma Thurman surprised me in this role, as subtle as a villain as she’s powerful too, dangerous and intelligent, a true manipulator.

Print/Audio Quality

The print is presented in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. ‘Down a Dark Hall’ is a pleasant surprise exceeding my expectations. There is a supernatural look and darker colors that are used throughout the entire film. This helps set the tone and mood throughout the entire film. Colors are deep and well saturated throughout the entire presentation. I found blacks to be strong and inky. Flesh tones are also natural. All this adds to a very good image presentation on Blu-ray which fans of the film will feel right at home.
Print Quality: 9.5/10

The audio is presented in a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix. ‘Down a Dark Hall’ is a very explosive suspense film from the start filling the soundfield as if you are in the middle of the action. What this film does is fill the missing gap the last few years with suspense that builds up. There are a lot here which works well with the audio mix giving this a demo worthy experience. Panning effects are very well done as you hear bullets whizzing from speaker to speaker. The sound is very crisp throughout. Bass is punchy. Dialogue is clean through the center channel and is nice and loud.

Final Thoughts

‘Down a Dark Hall’ is not your typical teen movie, nor is it your typical horror film. Has an artsy feel to it and could be something that gets more attention later as these actresses careers take off.
