Based on the beloved bestselling novel by W. Bruce Cameron, A Dog’s Purpose, from director Lasse Hallström (The Cider House Rules, Dear John, The Hundred-Foot Journey), shares the soulful and surprising story of one devoted dog (voiced by Josh Gad) who finds the meaning of his own existence through the lives of the humans he teaches to laugh and love.

I read W. Bruce Cameron’s book when it first came out and then again in preparation for the movie. Having lost my dog as an adult last August, I was nervous about how much crying I would do. But, the truth is that while I did cry a bit, it was a good cry – very cathartic. And, the way the film was made, there’s immediate puppy joy after the tears. A Dog’s Purpose is an awesome movie about a dog’s love for their human. The movie literally portrays so many different ways that dogs are treated. This is an amazing movie. The movie left me feeling happy. The movie was very enjoyable and I would recommend that you go and see it.

The concept of reincarnation, the various experiences of a dog through a dog’s eyes, the relevance of the dog to its owners’ lives all allow the spectator to be completely absorbed and drawn into each of the subplots. There was diversity both from the perspective of the owners shown and of the dog breeds -and yet every one of the subplots tugs at your heart (or should somehow). This is not just for kids.

Print/Audio Quality

The print is presented in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ is a beautiful looking film on Blu-ray. I found this print to be rather eye pleasing with vibrant colors. Fleshtones are very natural and accurate, considering that we see a few bare necessities throughout. Black levels are solid throughout. The image was also sharp with excellent details. The details on the various dogs fur looks really good that would not disappoint those that love to see every single detail in their films.
Print Quality: 9/10

The audio is presented in a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. Dialogue for the most part is handled very well, I never felt like there were any issues with the audio. The score of the film is also very good. Music and other sounds throughout the film can be heard clearly. The sound stage does a nice job at whatever is thrown at it, especially some of the lighter action scenes in the film which sounded very good.
Audio Quality: 9/10

Final Thoughts

The movie builds a human’s love for their dog, and it really portrays how a dog is truly a man’s best friend. It does bother me that there were boycotts with the film, which is a real shame since this is a hidden gem of a movie that is for the whole family.
